DIAMOND CROWN

“I didn’t care how long it took, how much it cost, or even whether it would sell. I simply wanted to make the best cigar in the world.”

— Stanford J. Newman (1916 – 2006)

Diamond Crown Classic is J.C. Newman’s anniversary cigar. Handmade at Tabacalera A. Fuente, Diamond Crown Classic cigars are exquisitely rolled with either five-year-old Connecticut Shade or Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper around an exceptionally aged blend of Dominican binder and filler tobaccos. Diamond Crown Classic is packed in white cabinets with a piano finish inside a luxurious purple and gold carton. Diamond Crown Classic is the perfect cigar to celebrate special occasions or to smoke while enjoying the finest things in life.

Diamond Crown Classic cigars are creamy and smooth while still complex and flavorful. Diamond Crown’s exceptional taste comes from its double fermented wrappers. Nearly all tobacco is fermented a single time. Diamond Crown wrappers are conditioned, graded, selected, and fermented twice.  It is this second fermentation that evens and deepens the Rosado color of the tobacco wrapper and eliminates any potential rawness.  After being rolled, Diamond Crown Classic cigars are inspected three times to ensure perfection and are aged in lots of 50 cigars for a minimum of 12 months.

J.C. Newman first created Diamond Crown more than a century ago. From the beginning, Diamond Crown was a luxury cigar. When most cigars sold for 2 cents, Diamond Crown was a nickel. When the price of a typical cigar was 5 cents, Diamond Crown sold for a dime. Diamond Crown was a very popular brand before fading away shortly before World War II.

In 1995, Stanford J. Newman and Carlos Fuente, Jr. created Diamond Crown Classic to celebrate J.C. Newman’s 100th anniversary.  Diamond Crown revolutionized the cigar industry because it was the first cigar to have a 54 ring gauge, launching the trend of thicker cigars. Diamond Crown had the most ornate cigar packaging in the 1990s. Cigars were wrapped in tissue paper. The labels and bands were printed with gold foils and bronzing in Holland, and each cigar box was packed in the same luxurious outer carton as top-shelf liquor bottles. In 2024, J.C. Newman elevated the packaging of Diamond Crown Classic in preparation for the company’s 130th anniversary.

Today, the Diamond Crown family includes Diamond Crown Classic, Diamond Crown MAXIMUS, Diamond Crown Julius Caeser, Diamond Crown Black Diamond, and a line of luxury cigar humidors and accessories. We invite you to enjoy your favorite Diamond Crown cigar at one of more than three dozen Diamond Crown Cigar Lounges across the United States.

J.C. Newman Cigar Co. was founded on May 5, 1895.  In celebration of its 130th anniversary, J.C. Newman is introducing the Diamond Crown 130th Anniversary Humidor.  This luxurious humidor is handcrafted with a glossy white piano finish, gold accents, and custom diamond-shaped hardware.  Each humidor contains five trays with 130 rare Diamond Crown Belicoso No. 9 cigars.  J.C. Newman is releasing a total 130 humidors with a suggested retail price of $2,250.

“Diamond Crown is our family’s anniversary cigar,” said fourth-generation owner Drew Newman.  “My great-grandfather created Diamond Crown more than a century ago.  In 1995, my grandfather Stanford J. Newman and Carlos Fuente, Jr. created Diamond Crown Classic to celebrate our company’s 100th anniversary.  It is only fitting that we celebrate our latest milestone with our Diamond Crown 130th Anniversary humidor.”

When J.C. Newman founded his company in 1895, there were 40,000 licensed cigar manufacturers in the United States.  Today, J.C. Newman is America’s oldest family-owned premium cigar maker.  Its iconic El Reloj cigar factory in the “Cigar City” of Tampa, Florida is the last traditional cigar factory still operating in the United States.

“We introduced the rare Diamond Crown Belicoso No. 9 cigars when we unveiled our new, elevated Diamond Crown Classic packaging at the Big Smoke Las Vegas last November,” said Newman. “Our Diamond Crown 130th anniversary humidors will be the first time this new size is shared with cigar enthusiasts around the country.”

When describing creating Diamond Crown Classic in 1995, Stanford J. Newman said, “I didn’t care how long it took, how much it cost, or even whether it would sell. I simply wanted to make the best cigar in the world,” and Carlos Fuente, Jr., said, “I made this cigar for a man I loved.”

INTERESTED IN CIGARS FROM THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC?

A Leader in the Cigar Industry

A century ago, Angel Cuesta was one of the leaders of the cigar industry in Tampa.  Inside each box of Angel Cuesta cigars is the following excerpt of a story by Angel Cuesta on why Tampa was the Fine Cigar Capital of the World:

“If you are a man who enjoys a really fine cigar, you have probably long since discovered the hand-made Tampa cigar with its superb smoking qualities – choice, clear Havana tobacco at its best! If you haven’t made this discovery, we believe it is time you did. And so we tell you how these cigars are created, and about Tampa, too – for the story of fine cigars is inseparable from the story of Tampa.

“Tampa today is the bustling metropolis of Florida’s West Coast, center of the most populous – and prosperous area of Florida. Despite the fact that it is the State’s leading industrial city, it is also a resort city – equally a fine place to work, to live, and to play. It is a city of color and contrasts; of carnival gaiety and progressive modern enterprise. Its Latin Quarter is a carry-over from the Old World into the new. In this Latin Quarter, center of life for some 40,000 persons of Spanish and Cuban descent, are located the majority of the cigar factories that produce these fine cigars.

“The story of these cigars begins long ago. It begins in the mild, tropical climes of Cuban’s picturesque tobacco plantations. It begins in the skilled fingers of the cigarmaker, whose art is a heritage from the Old World.  Yes, and it begins in the minds of a few enterprising men who had the foresight to recognize Tampa’s advantages as a potential cigar center.

It was Senor V. Martinez Ybor who pioneered the movement which made Tampa the cigar capital of America. In 1869 Ybor had transferred his factory from Havana to Key West, to escape the depredations of the Spanish volunteer troops. As others followed, Key West became the center of America’s clear Havana industry of America’s clear Havana industry.

“Seventeen years later, Ybor and Eduardo Manrara, his partner, were impressed by the climatic and geographical possibilities of Tampa as a manufacturing site, when seeking a more favorable location for their operation. Tampa, then but a sprawling, lusty frontier hamlet, offered a large area of local hands to the cigar men, thus laying the cornerstone for one of the city’s principal industries. Other alert cigar men followed. Ybor’s example, and Tampa’s emergence as the manufacturing hub of Florida became an accomplished fact.

“Today, the finest cigars in the world are made in Tampa."
