Angel Cuesta is one of the cigar industry’s most storied names, with a history that spans more than a century and a connection to Spanish royalty. Originally introduced over 100 years ago, the brand is named in honor of Angel LaMadrid Cuesta, one of the founders of the legendary Cuesta-Rey cigar brand.
Today, J.C. Newman Cigar Co. continues that legacy by handcrafting Angel Cuesta cigars in the historic El Reloj cigar factory in Tampa, Florida, preserving the brand’s remarkable heritage and the centuries-old tradition of premium cigar making.
The Royal History
Angel LaMadrid Cuesta helped establish one of the most respected names in premium cigars alongside his business partner, Peregrino Rey. Their commitment to exceptional quality earned international acclaim, including recognition from the Spanish royal family. Angel Cuesta became the official cigar of King Alfonso XIII, who reigned over Spain from 1886 to 1931.
This royal distinction reflected the prestige of the brand and solidified Angel Cuesta’s reputation as a cigar associated with refinement, craftsmanship, and luxury.
J.C. Newman Revives the Historic Brand
Founded in 1895, J.C. Newman Cigar Co. has spent more than 130 years preserving many of the premium cigar industry’s most historic brands. Acquired in 1958, Angel Cuesta remains an integral part of that legacy, combining its rich history with modern cigar craftsmanship.
Every Angel Cuesta cigar is handmade at J.C. Newman’s El Reloj cigar factory in Tampa’s historic Ybor City. As America’s last traditional cigar factory, El Reloj continues to produce premium cigars using time-honored techniques practiced by generations of skilled artisans.

Angel Cuesta Shade
Building on the success of the Rosado blend, J.C. Newman introduced Angel Cuesta Shade, a companion to the award-winning Angel Cuesta Rosado.
Like its counterpart, Angel Cuesta Shade is handmade by expert cigar rollers at the El Reloj cigar factory in Ybor City. The blend features a smooth Nicaraguan Shade wrapper paired with aged binder and filler tobaccos from three continents, creating a refined smoking experience while maintaining the signature pigtail cap that defines the Angel Cuesta line.
